ED TIMBERLAKE: TRADE DRESS, TRADEMARKS, BREWERS AND LUNCH
What is so special about a Trademark?
Don’t ask Ed Timberlake (Linkedin) – Board Certified Specialist in Trademark Law. One glance at his tumblr, twitter or blog will through you off tracj. Ed is a (wait for it…) former Trademark Examining Attorney at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, former Copyright Examiner at the U.S. Copyright Office. He focuses entirely on trademarks & copyrights, primarily providing advice, preparing & filing applications, and maintaining registrations. Ed has a unique and creative approach to this subject.
Ed finds endless fascination in trademarks and will entertain and educate you in this art of drawing the fine line line “where marketing and creative meet”. You have never met an attorney like Ed. One glance at his website will confirm all the fears you have about mountaineering and trademarks:
“Visiting this website isn’t the same as receiving legal advice specific to your situation. One way you know that is because it’s a website, not yet a conversation; the other is that legal advice typically costs money.”
Monica Doss sums it up like this: “My feeling is that, while some businesses have copyright concerns, and a few will face patent issues, every single commercial endeavor needs a trademark strategy. With that in mind, I’d be inclined to focus this session entirely on trademarks (also, they’re my favorite subject).”
I could not agree with Monica more. Trademarks are fascinating, and pretty darn tricky. Come listen to Ed sing his birdsong and show you the hows and whys of plumes of feathers do not always stick together.
From Ed’s blog: Trademarks are Magic or his twitter feed.

You’ve read the headlines in VentureBeat, Exit Event, TechCrunch and the Triad Business Journal — “StartupInc. Closes Angel (or VC, or crowdfunding) Financing!”
But, what’s the story behind the story? Meet three founders – Shawn Gagne, Urban Offset, Kya Johnson, RanbowMe, and Ryan Pratt, Guerilla RF – who will talk candidly about their fundraising strategies and experiences, how they prepared, what they would do differently and what surprised them most.
There will definitely be some myth busting and a lively exchange. Come early and plan to stick around afterwards for food, drink and lots of connecting, HQ Greensboro-style. Pre-registration is highly encouraged..
Our esteemed panelists:
Shawn Gagne is founder and CEO of Urban Offsets, a software and services company that determines the carbon offset of the trees on city property, enables cities to sell carbon credits, and finds appropriate buyers. Urban Offsets recently closed on a seed round from a private investor, won the 2016 New Ventures Challenge and in 2015 won a $50,000 NCIDEA grant.
Kya Johnson founded her third startup RainbowMe in 2013 as the entertainment platform that aggregates and produces content that exposes young children to a wide variety of cultures and traditions. Following a funded residency from CODE 2040, the RainbowMe team successfully completed a $35K crowdfunding campaign in October 2015 and is currently raising capital.
Ryan Pratt founded Guerilla RF in 2013 to develop high performance MMICs that allow wireless infrastructure equipment manufacturers to provide greater coverage area and higher data rates. Guerilla RF secured a $50K NCIDEA grant, followed by a $1 million angel financing. To date it has raised $5 million in funding and introduced over 50 products.

If you’ve agonized over your investor pitch, you’ll enjoy this opportunity to turn the tables. Funders want you to define and quantify the problem you’re solving, your target customer and your market. They want to be confident about the team and what they bring to the table. Last but not least, how will you make money and how much?
So, we’ve asked 3 different early stage investors to do the same pitch — to you–startups and inventors, as well as peers and potential fund investors. Each will do an 8 minute pitch and we’ll open for a most certainly lively 1 hour Q&A so you can ask your questions about their pitch, your pitch and anything else involved in establishing and maintaining a successful entrepreneur-investor relationship.

Admit it. Developing startup financials can be daunting. Time and expertise are in short supply, while relevant information ranges from overwhelming to nonexistent. It’s not surprising that founders and aspiring entrepreneurs often wing it, avoid it or wait until an investor or bank makes them do it.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can unlock your own Founder Financial Zen by understanding the “what’s” and the “why’s.” In this experiential workshop, we’ll work on creating and using stage-appropriate financial information — from an entrepreneur’s perspective.
- What do you need to know to make decisions?
- What can you know at different stages?
- What do you pay hyper-attention to and what can you ignore?
- And, most importantly, how do you make financial insights work for you – from shaping an early idea through funding and profitability.
This is a hands-on session. Teams welcome.
Registration is required because seats are limited.
Pizza will be provided, or you are welcome to brown bag!For more information, click here.
