Ryan Barry of HQ Greensboro and Lyndon Rego of the Center for Creative Leadership are hosting an Entrepreneurial Lunch & Learn in the Cafe. This event will combined with an interactive brainstorming session, and all HQ members are welcome to participate.

During the fall semester each year, the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center at UNC Greensboro sponsors the 2 Minutes to Win It Business Idea Competition. 2 Minutes is open to all full-time students who are at least 18 years old at UNCG, NCAT, Greensboro College, Guilford College, Bennett College, Elon University, Guilford Tech and High Point University.

On Pitch Day, the 20 Finalists selected by a panel of First Round Judges will have two minutes to pitch his or her idea to another panel of 30+ Entrepreneur Judges. The winners will be announced at the following reception. Prizes include $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, $250 for third place and $250 for the best presentation, as well as other prizes.

Both the Pitch Day presentations and Awards Reception will be held at HQ Greensboro.

HQ Greensboro will be hosting a Happy Hour & Wrap Party to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week. We hope to have participants and local entrepreneurs join us in celebrating the events of the week, and the vibrancy of Greensboro's entrepreneurial ecosystem. In addition, HQ will be open to the public for tours of the space.

The Startup Factory is hosting their Bootcamp at HQ from Dec. 1-3. This is a great opportunity for startups to get 3 days of intensive coaching from Dave Neal and Chris Heivly, the leaders of the southeast's largest seed fund. Entrepreneurs should expect a heavy dose of lean startup methods, customer development and pitch coaching. The session wraps up with a pitch showcase with the whole community.

Don’t ask Ed Timberlake (Linkedin) – Board Certified Specialist in Trademark Law. One glance at his tumblr, twitter or blog will through you off tracj. Ed is a (wait for it…) former Trademark Examining Attorney at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, former Copyright Examiner at the U.S. Copyright Office. He focuses entirely on trademarks & copyrights, primarily providing advice, preparing & filing applications, and maintaining registrations. Ed has a unique and creative approach to this subject.

Ed finds endless fascination in trademarks and will entertain and educate you in this art of drawing the fine line line “where marketing and creative meet”. You have never met an attorney like Ed. One glance at his website will confirm all the fears you have about mountaineering and trademarks:

“Visiting this website isn’t the same as receiving legal advice specific to your situation. One way you know that is because it’s a website, not yet a conversation; the other is that legal advice typically costs money.”

Monica Doss sums it up like this: “My feeling is that, while some businesses have copyright concerns, and a few will face patent issues, every single commercial endeavor needs a trademark strategy. With that in mind, I’d be inclined to focus this session entirely on trademarks (also, they’re my favorite subject).”

I could not agree with Monica more. Trademarks are fascinating, and pretty darn tricky. Come listen to Ed sing his birdsong and show you the hows and whys of plumes of feathers do not always stick together.

Shawn Gagne is founder and CEO of Urban Offsets, a software and services company that determines the carbon offset of the trees on city property, enables cities to sell carbon credits, and finds appropriate buyers. Urban Offsets recently closed on a seed round from a private investor, won the 2016 New Ventures Challenge and in 2015 won a $50,000 NCIDEA grant.

Kya Johnson founded her third startup RainbowMe in 2013 as the entertainment platform that aggregates and produces content that exposes young children to a wide variety of cultures and traditions. Following a funded residency from CODE 2040, the RainbowMe team successfully completed a $35K crowdfunding campaign in October 2015 and is currently raising capital.

Ryan Pratt founded Guerilla RF in 2013 to develop high performance MMICs that allow wireless infrastructure equipment manufacturers to provide greater coverage area and higher data rates. Guerilla RF secured a $50K NCIDEA grant, followed by a $1 million angel financing. To date it has raised $5 million in funding and introduced over 50 products.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend the Open Gate City Program launch! Join us to learn how the City’s new open data portal will make data easily accessible and enhance transparency.

The portal will include data from public safety, local ordinance enforcement, human resources and finance, as well as permit and inspection information. City staff will continue to gather information for release to the Open Gate City portal as an ongoing process. The portal will make data easily accessible in an effort to encourage residents to become more familiar with how their government is performing, engage with the city’s developer community, and build tools and resources that will enhance city services.

Dutchman takes place on a New York Subway where a young African American man and a white woman's flirtation leads to violent end when she pushes his buttons about race, class and masculinity.
In The Slave, Baraka drops us off in the middle of a very personal race riot with an African American man, his white ex and her new white husband. Both address underlying race and sexual tensions within intimate social contexts.
