HQ veteran Jeff SanGeorge has been around since the beginning of HQ Greensboro, even before the beginning! “I was working upstairs while it still smelled like fumes and paint!”

Jeff began Magnetic Ideas in 2012, focused on utilizing social media for business marketing.

Jeff describes an integral aspect of his job to stay up to date on social media for business. “The web changes every day. You have to stay on top of it by keeping current with what the trends are. Go to the sources, read what google publishes, learn about what twitter is doing. Of course, actually use the platforms to see what works [for advertising] and what doesn’t.”

Jeff is used to utilizing change to his advantage. Before starting Magnetic Ideas, he lived in Raleigh and worked in real-estate marketing.  When the market crashed in 2008, he was laid off. “That was the push I needed to go out on my own. Without being laid off, I don’t know if I would have had the guts to do it.”

Despite the optimistic perspective, Jeff admits he wouldn’t have been ready to start his own company without gaining experience working a 9 to 5 job. “I wasn’t ready to go out on my own fresh out of college. After working in a traditional setting, I understood operations, communications, HR, the aspects that make a business work. It gave me a great perspective to help me do it myself.”

From Raleigh, Jeff and his wife moved back to Greensboro, “practically against our will. We were like, we are leaving once we get the first opportunity. But then we reconnected with people we love and our church. We were gone six years, and it seems like in that time Greensboro really grew up.”

To Jeff, being an entrepreneur means taking risks in order to do what you love every day. “You can’t be complacent, you have to always be on the lookout for the next big thing- next opportunity and trend. It means making your own way, not being accountable to the structure of a traditional business where you answer to someone three levels above you. After spending ten years in the corporate world, I was frustrated. I wanted to do what I loved every day. If you want to do something badly enough you’ve got to do it yourself.”
